About FAFSA Ready Iowa

The Program
FAFSA Ready Iowa is a program in which trained volunteers provide free, on-site assistance to students and families in filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is the federally required form for students seeking financial aid for college. Completing the FAFSA is the first and most important step in qualifying for financial aid.

FAFSA Ready Iowa is the continuation of the Iowa College Goal Sunday program, the state program of the national College Goal Sunday program.

2017-18 Events
Planning for the 2017-18 FAFSA Ready Iowa events is currently underway. Events will be held in from October 2017 through March 2018. Beginning October 1, 2017, the FAFSA application will be available for students to complete.

Past Events
The College Goal Sunday program came to Iowa in February 2009 through funding from Lumina Foundation for Education and through the collaborative effort of state partners. The inaugural event took place in five Iowa cities. During Iowa College Goal Sunday in February 2011, more than 600 FAFSAs were completed and in February 2012, 2013 and 2014, more than 700 FAFSAs were completed, helping students find the funding they need to attend college. In 2015, a record 956 FAFSAs were completed. This record was broken in spring 2016 with 1,096 FAFSAs completed.

In the fall of 2016 College Goal Sunday transitioned to FAFSA Ready Iowa and the program was expanded. From October 1 2016 through March 21, 2017, 4,365 FAFSAs were filed at community-based events, ICAN Student Success Centers, and school-based FAFSA events.
