Wartburg College Ramps up IINspire Programming

One dozen first-year students got an early taste of life at Wartburg College during a three-day, pre-orientation program designed specifically for minorities majoring in science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.

The pre-orientation program is one of several the college will coordinate throughout the academic year as part of the Iowa Illinois Nebraska STEM Partnership for Innovation in Research and Education (IINspire).

At Wartburg, efforts are focused on the pre-orientation program; peer, faculty, and alumni mentoring programs; career-building workshops; research opportunities; community-building events; and academic success workshops.

“The IINspire program allows Wartburg to participate in efforts to strengthen the diversity of our nation’s STEM workforce and supports the success of our underrepresented minority students,” said Dr. LeAnn Faidley, associate professor of engineering science and program campus director.

Dr. Eric Merten, assistant professor of biology, leads a group of incoming first-year students collecting specimens on the Cedar River. The students later analyzed their finds in the lab.

IINspire is part of the Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation funded by the National Science Foundation. The alliance includes 16 state, private, and community colleges that work together to broaden the participation of underrepresented minorities in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
