GEAR UP Students Learn about High School Options

In early December, Sioux City GEAR UP gave half of the freshman at all three high schools in Sioux City the opportunity to shadow a CTE (Career and Technical Education) class for a 90 minute block.  Students were given the chance to self-select which of the CTE pathways was most intriguing to them and spend time submerged in that class.  The goal of the experience was to give students a better understanding of the opportunities available to them in the Sioux City Schools prior to registering for their sophomore level classes.  Depending on their selection the students were transported to one of the three high schools, the Ho-Chunk center, the Educational Services Center, or to the Harry Hopkins building.  Students visited areas that included Auto Body, Auto Mechanics, Air Force Junior ROTC, Business, Child Development Associate, Computer Science, Construction, Culinary, Engineering, Fashion Design, Graphic Design, Health Sciences, Interior Design or Welding.  The remaining half of the freshman class will get a chance to complete their shadows in the end of January. By the end of the month nearly 1100 freshman will have completed and individualized experience based off of their college and career aspirations.

GEAR UP is a federally funded grant program that works with the students in the Class of 2020 at East, North, and West High in Sioux City and other schools across the nation.  The goal of GEAR UP is to increase the number of students who are prepared to enter and succeed in post-secondary.
