What to Wear

No matter how good you are, you aren't likely to get hired if you show up for your job interview in a pair of sweatpants. Show that you care about this position through your clothes.

What to Wear for Women: What to Wear for Men:
  • Solid-color, conservative suit
  • Solid-color, conservative suit. Preferably in navy or black
  • Coordinated blouse
  • White or light-color collared, long-sleeve shirt
  • Conservative tie
  • Tan or light-color hosiery
  • Dark socks
  • Closed toe moderate height heels
  • Professional shoes
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Neat, professional hairstyle
  • Classic jewelry
  • Limited jewelry: watch, wedding band
  • Light makeup or perfume
  • Little or no aftershave/cologne
  • Manicured nails in a conservative color
  • Neatly trimmed nails
  • Portfolio or briefcase

What Not to Wear:

  • Sweatpants or workout clothing.
  • Stiletto heels or sandals.
  • Visible body piercing.
  • Rumpled clothing.
  • Pants with a waistband below the hips.
  • Skirts with hemlines higher than three inches above the knee.
  • Capri pants or leggings.
  • Noisy or costume jewelry.
  • Leather jackets or blazers.
  • Bare legs.
  • Outdated suits.
  • Multi-colored, highly patterned handbags.
