COUNCIL BLUFFS, IOWA (July 28, 2014) — ICAN is proud to announce and welcome Steve Irvin as the Student Success Advisor for the Southwest ICAN Student Success Center in Council Bluffs. Irvin will be responsible for 14 counties, 48 high schools and more than 13,000 students in Southwest Iowa.

"I have watched ICAN provide essential presentations and services in the area of college planning and financial aid for years, and I know how important they have been for my students and parents. To be given the chance to serve with this organization is a great privilege.” said Irvin. “I look forward to having an impact on hundreds of students and families across western Iowa which will be a lot of fun but also a sacred responsibility."

Over the past 30 years Steve has served the communities of Iowa at Treynor, South Page and Mallard Community Schools as an educator, counselor and coach. During his successful tenure at Treynor High School, he worked directly with students to create plans for life after high school, including career pathway planning, college planning, academic preparation and an introduction to the financial aid process. As school counselor Irvin also worked with students dealing with social and emotional issues.

In addition, Steve has served in leadership roles with the Iowa School Counselor Association (ISCA), Southwest Iowa Counselors and Western Iowa Counselors, ICAN Advisory Council, and the University of Iowa Counselor Advisory Board. In 2004, Steve was named Counselor of the Year by the Iowa Association of College Admission Counseling (Iowa ACAC).

Erick Danielson, ICAN Supervisor states "As an educator in Iowa for more than 30 years, including many as a school counselor, Steve brings of wealth of knowledge to ICAN, especially in the areas of career and college planning.  Steve will be the first former school counselor hired by ICAN as a Student Success Advisor, and we are excited at the new perspectives he'll bring to the team.  Steve has a passion for what ICAN does and we are excited to have him on our team.
