Advanced Financial Aid Training for Financial Planners
Paying for college isn’t easy. For parents, it can be a stressful and confusing process, where uninformed choices can lead to devastating long-term financial impacts. Estimates show that approximately 45 million Americans have student loan debt, according to a report by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. More so, the total of that debt is more than $1.4 trillion.
Whether you’re a financial planner, advisor, or CPA, you’re perfectly positioned to provide information, resources, and expertise to guide families through this complex process…..but first, you need to master the financial aid process, timelines, terminology, and options.
ICAN, a 20-year-old statewide nonprofit organization specializing in helping thousands of Iowans understand college costs annually, is pleased to offer “Advanced Financial Aid Training for Financial Professionals” – a half-day workshop designed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the financial aid process and how to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The following topics will be covered through an interactive, group discussion using scenarios and real-life examples:
- Defining Financial Aid
- Types of Financial Aid
- How Financial Need is Calculated
- Options for Students and Parents
- Understanding Student Loans
- Completing the FAFSA Form
- Avoiding Common FAFSA Mistakes
- Understanding FAFSA Results
Following the training, participants will complete an assessment to demonstrate mastery. Those passing the assessment will be designated as “ICAN Certified” for the twelve-month period following. “ICAN Certified” professionals will be promoted as local resources on both the ICAN website and in ICAN’s Financial Aid Guide, of which more than 25,000 are printed and shared with parents in every high school statewide.
