FAFSA Completion Assistance Certification Program

The ICAN FAFSA Completion Assistance Certification Program is an ICAN initiative that aims to increase the availability of professionals able to assist students through the financial aid process, including the completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA.)

Upcoming Events

FAFSA: A Scenario-Based Training

FAFSA: A Scenario-Based Training provides participants the opportunity to learn about the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and gain understanding of how to assist in the completion of the form. Participants will work with other professionals in the field to understand common issues and misconceptions that arise when assisting students in navigating the financial aid process. The following topics will be covered through an interactive, group discussion using scenarios and real-life examples:

  • Current financial aid concepts, tools, and resources at the state and federal level
  • FAFSA form review
  • FAFSA challenges & common mistakes
  • Federal and state aid eligibility
  • Dependency parental information
  • Financial information requirements
  • FAFSA results meaning

Following the training participants will be assessed and those passing the assessment will be ICAN Certified to assist with FAFSA completion. The certification is for four-years with an online re-certification in year five.

Upcoming Trainings

Training and four-year certification is $50. Virtual training dates run from 8:30 am - Noon and are scheduled:

  • November 1, 2023 - Register
  • December 7, 2023 - Sponsored by Iowa College Aid (invitation only)

FAFSA Recertification: A Scenario-Based Training

FAFSA Recertification: A Scenario-Based Training provides those previously certified by ICAN the opportunity to renew that certification.

The training provides participants the opportunity to refresh their knowledge and understanding of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) and assistance in the completion of the form. Participants will review financial aid terms and programs, and work through FAFSA scenarios to determine the correct path for completion. This training will provide traditional, as well as more complex scenarios for participants to work through. Participants will complete an online assessment at the end of the training to earn recertification through the ICAN program.

Recertification is offered after the initial four-year certification is complete. If you missed recertification - contact Erick Danielson.
