ICAN Welcomes Dougherty as New Student Success Advisor

August 1, 2017

HIAWATHA, IOWA (August 1, 2017) — ICAN is pleased to announce that Mary Joan Dougherty has joined the organization as a Student Success Advisor at its Eastern Iowa Student Success Center in Hiawatha. Dougherty will be part of a team responsible for providing college and career readiness services in 22 counties to more than 39 high schools and more than 15,600 students in Eastern Iowa.

“I am very excited to become a part of the Iowa College Access Network staff! I have been fortunate to host many different ICAN presenters in my years as a high school counselor, and they have all been so helpful and knowledgeable in assisting my students and their families,” said Dougherty, one of five finalists for the Iowa ACAC 2017 School Counselor of the Year. “I look forward to learning from them and sharing that knowledge with the many new students and families I will meet through my ICAN experiences. ICAN is a wonderful organization, and I am thrilled and honored to become a part of it.”

Over the past 30 years Dougherty has served the communities of Iowa at Maple Valley-Anthon Oto, Boyer Valley, Logan-Magnolia, and Woodbine Community Schools as an educator and school counselor. During her successful tenure at Maple Valley-Anthon Oto High School, she worked directly with students to create plans for life after high school, including career pathway planning, college planning, academic preparation and an introduction to the financial aid process.

Erick Danielson, ICAN Vice President of Programs states "As an educator in Iowa for more than 30 years, including many as a school counselor, Mary Joan brings of wealth of knowledge to ICAN, especially in the areas of career and college planning. Mary Joan has a passion for what ICAN does and we are excited to have her on our team."
