Iowa College Access Network Awards Scholarship
DES MOINES, IOWA – Aug. 27, 2008 – CaBrie Claiser of Lenox, Iowa, was the lucky
winner of the Iowa College Access Network (ICAN) $1,000 college scholarship that was
drawn from more than 1,900 entries submitted at the 2008 Iowa State Fair.
Claiser is a senior at the University of Iowa. She is pursuing a bachelor’s degree
in psychology, and plans to attend graduate school. “I am really surprised as I know a
lot of people fill out a card for a chance to win!” said Claiser. “I think it’s great that ICAN
offers the scholarship and it is a great opportunity for someone to get money to go to
college. This scholarship will help me pay for my textbooks this year.”
“We’re thrilled to offer this scholarship to CaBrie and wish her success,” said Rob
Miller, ICAN director. “I think it’s fair to say the phenomenal response to our scholarship
giveaway is a reflection of the strong interest Iowa students have in pursuing a
postsecondary education. Our mission at ICAN is to help students make college a
reality.”
Miller noted that students should not hesitate to apply for scholarships. “ICAN
impacts roughly 30,000 parents and students each year. Many are faced with obstacles
in funding a college education. That’s why we encourage students to start searching
and applying for scholarships as early as middle school. There are many out there for
deserving students, but they’ve got to do the research. Our Web site,
www.ICANsucceed.org, is a great place to start because we’ve got links to free,
legitimate scholarship search tools.”
