Programs Receive Grants to Help Students Get to College
Funds Intended to Spread KnowHow2GO Message
WEST DES MOINES, IOWA (Jan. 15, 2010) — Ten Iowa organizations will be able to offer
Iowa students more information on how to get to college, thanks to grants from
KnowHow2GOIowa.
Each program was recently awarded $11,200 to encourage students to find their way to
college by following the four steps promoted by KnowHow2GO, a national multimedia
campaign. The KnowHow2GO steps are asking for help; pushing yourself to prepare for
college; finding the right fit in a school; and finding available financial aid.
“The role that these organizations play in students’ lives is critical,” said Juan Garcia,
executive director of the Iowa College Access Network®
(ICAN), which plays a major role in
the KnowHow2GOIowa campaign. “As students become aware that college is attainable,
their whole outlook on the future changes.”
Garcia said the grant committee awarded the funds to the organizations that would most
effectively spread the KnowHow2GO message among Iowa students most in need,
including low-income and first-generation youths. Grant recipients are:
Central Iowa Reengagement Center
Denison Community School District
Des Moines Area Community College
Des Moines Independent School District
Des Moines Public Library
Heartland Area Education Agency 11 — Shelter Care Program
Luther College
Muscatine Community School District
Perry High School
University of Northern Iowa
The national KnowHow2GO campaign is funded by Lumina Foundation for Education and
American Council on Education. Scholarship America is the fiscal agent for the awards.
