College and Career Readiness Programming Fuels Economic Growth in Iowa
CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA (November 15, 2012) — The Iowa College Access Network (ICAN)
is pleased to welcome Sylvan Learning as a 2013 member organization. As a member,
Sylvan will partner with ICAN to provide comprehensive college and career readiness
programming and resources for students and parents at Linn-Mar High School in Marion,
and Hempstead High School in Dubuque.
“ICAN is such a great partner for Sylvan because ICAN actually goes into each school and
already has a relationship with students and parents,” explained Patty Wright, director of
community outreach at Sylvan Learning in Cedar Rapids. “By becoming a member of ICAN,
Sylvan can take the next step with students and parents, helping them achieve the best ACT
scores, develop better study skills, relieve test taking anxiety and preparing them for their
future success.”
Sylvan Learning is a supplemental education resource within the Cedar Rapids community,
which focuses on the individual student’s academic needs. Through individualized
assessments, Sylvan is able to create customized learning experiences, tailored to each
child’s exact needs. The Sylvan Learning program puts an emphasis on working with local
school systems and neighborhood organizations to create educational initiatives that benefit
children for life. Page 2 of 2
“ICAN welcomes Sylvan Learning as a member of our network,” explained Rob Miller,
executive director of ICAN. “Our aim is to bring together business and industry leaders in
Iowa communities that have a passion for and see the importance of increased educational
attainment. Studies indicate that 90 percent of the fastest growing careers require postsecondary training or education and ICAN offers the most complete, step-by-step guide for
parents and students to prepare for these careers and life after high school. With the
wonderful support from members such as Sylvan Learning, ICAN is able to deliver college
planning, financial aid awareness, and financial literacy information and resources to Iowa
communities at no cost to the school, its students, or families.”
ICAN’s programs and services are developed and presented by ICAN’s highly trained
representatives on topics such as high school planning, college and career planning,
financial literacy, successful college transitions and financial aid. ICAN serves nearly
300,000 students and parents annually. Students are encouraged to check with their high
school counseling offices for the dates, times and locations of ICAN presentations in their
